Nathan Jurevicius
Internationally renowned artist, toy designer and illustrator Nathan Jurevicius works in a variety of media, with works that include vividly hued ink and watercolour drawings, animations, and large-scale sculptural installations. Interested in weighty themes of religion and spirituality, Jurevicius makes specific reference to Eastern European folktales. Stemming from his Lithuanian background and personal religious upbringing, Jurevicius uses a character called Scarygirl as an alter ego to explore the internal and external forces that manipulate, convince and challenge us. Taking the viewer through Scarygirl's introduction into and initial acceptance of organized religion, we witness the inevitable existential questioning of faith and morality.
Since 1994, Nathan has worked as a freelance illustrator and designer for dozens of clients, including Scholastic Inc, The Financial Review, Penguin Books, Subaru, Comedy Central, Allen and Unwin, Fuji, The Wall Street Journal, ABC, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., and the World Expo in Aichi, Japan, where he designed the Australian mascot.
In a recent commission, Nathan collaborated with MTV Canada to produce their first series of limited edition designer sculptures. Nathan
continues to expand the Scarygirl universe through several new projects including a graphic novel, video game, and animated feature film with Passion Pictures. Nathan has exhibited with Magic Pony in Forests Have Feelings Too (August 2004), Touch My Bunny (March 2005), Partridges & Pear Trees (December 2005), Cats Are the New Bunnies (February 2006), Give a Little (December 2006), Noble Fir (December 2007), Vesna Sontse (February 2008) and Reformation (May 2008). Nathan has exhibited with Narwhal in Stay Gold (December 2008).
